The Softer Side of Life…

November 20, 2007

There’s a fine line between Grandma-style and goddess-style when it comes to softer looks. A lot of it has to do with color, LOTS with fabric, and lots more with the cut of a garment. With metallics and warmth being the up and up this season, we’re really going to have to dig through the bargain bins for these – but it’ll be worth it for the feminine forms you’ll be able to create. Just don’t forget the stilettos. 😉

Inspired by the last top from our Lookbook Ripoff #2, readers and I
realized there was something to be said for soft, airy fabrics. So I
dug up some of the most beautiful, ethereal tops for heavenly prices.

Wool Cowl-Neck Sweater; Urban Outfitters – $48

Crochet Design Tunic; Forever21 – $16

Walter Silk Babydoll Tunic; Bluefly – $60

Kimchi & Blue Silk Dot Blouse; Urban Outfitters – $58
This one also comes in a beautiful blue-green color…

Lux Quatorze Silk Cami; Urban Outfitters$14.99
Super steal!! Comes in 3 other beautiful soft shades…

Chiffon Slit Sleeve Tie-Back Blouse; Urban Outfitters – $39.99
Check out the back!!

Whew! Well, that ought to get you started, huh?

Lookbook Ripoff #2 – Della Street: Sex Symbol

November 20, 2007

Penny Lane, Della Street, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary… Smoldering examples of a classic favorite in style: The Sexy Secretary.

Today’s Lookbook Ripoff comes from MaxStudio:

Foxy, no? So all this stuff together is about… $400. Yikes. Shoes + Top + Skirt = that much? Miss Elle don’t think so. Let’s try something else…

The beautiful pastel-colored silk blouse above rings in at a powerful $98. We found lots of similar tops to the one pictured above… But Hot & Cheap is hot for a reason – so we found something a little less soft and a little more saucy. The metallic in the shirt offsets the matte look of the skirt and opaque tights. Plus, it’s just sexy. Find it at Mandee for $24.

Now for that hot, slimming pencil skirt. The above one costs $148, no thank you. I’d rather pay $20.99 for an equally hot, pinstriped pencil skirt from Mandee. Hits right at the knees and looks great with any heel. Yum!

Here are some black tights from Target – cheap to boot – $12!

And those shoes! Those fierce, fierce shoes… We didn’t really feel like spending $150 on a pair of hot’n’strappy sandals. We felt like spending $44.90 on nearly the same ones from FlyJane.

So instead of the $250 we would have spent on the hot lookbook outfit, we’ll instead pay only about $120 to look just as fabulous! That’s less than half!

Replace your office phone with a rotary phone, get some cateye specs, and rock this look, girls… Rock it.

Lookbook Ripoff! #1

November 13, 2007

Lookbook Ripoff is where I dig some faboo outfit out of some EXTREMELY expensive boutique, and copy it for super-duper less money. There’s no reason you can’t get the hottest looks for less. Damnit!

Today’s look comes from

Beautiful, right? Well, it’d better be for a collective credit card payment of $1,863!!!
OUT. RAGEOUS. For an outfit so simple, we should be able to whip up a doppelganger in no time.

Let’s start out with the allegedly $110 grey shirt. Let’s try this one instead:

This shirt is all about flowy-ness, so you may want to order a size up for sheer tunic-y-ness. My deepest apologies for the abuse of hyphens in this description. You can find this shirt for a whopping $13.80 at Forever21. Steal!

So instead of $158 J Brand black pants, how about some o’ this…:

While the pants from the lookbook might be courderoy, these slim knit pants from Forever21 will set you back only $24.80. They’ll fit super-snug into those hot boots and show of your glorious gams.

Okay, it’s the moment of truth – let’s find some boots that DON’T cost us $679… Hopefully, that won’t be too hard at all:

These hot puppies have a bit of a thinner heel, but the height on the upper will give that sleek, slightly equestrian look that’s so lush and classy. AND – instead of paying that huge, bold number up there, try only spending $30.99 at GoJane. A little less heartbreaking, right?

Bag & Accessories = $1000+. RIDICULOUS. Absolutely ridiculous. Try:

The BAG (previously $409):

Forever21; $10.80

The necklace(s) (previously $200+):

Lulu’s Fashion Lounge, $11.00
Bracelet(s) (previously $250+):

Lulu’s Fashion Lounge, 9.00

So there we have it. We’ve efficiently created a hot look from a designer lookbook. Let’s check out the price difference…

H&C RIPOFF: $100.89

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE designer stuff… but as a lowly student/blogger/photographer/newspaper editor – I just can’t do it. Does that mean I’m going to walk around in my PJs until I hit it big? NO! It means that I will CHEAT and FAKE IT until I’m super famous and fabulous enough to afford everything. 😉

Purely Trend Report!

September 15, 2007

Every so often, we’ll showcase a MAAAJOR trend and search the web with a fine-toothed comb to find you the runway-look for dirt cheap.

Today’s trend:

This one was a hard one! There aren’t many oversize clutches out there for under $100, but we found three beautiful ones that fit the bill (no pun intended)! These are a great trend, in my opinion, because – let’s be honest – you can’t fit more than a credit card, ID, and small wad of cash into a regular-sized clutch… WHAT ABOUT LIPSTICK? (If you’ll notice through the posts, anything that can fit absolutely necessary things and lipstick absolutely entrance me.)

Here’s the picks we (and be “we” I mean “I”) found:

Just your basic, everyday black clutch… with some ROCK AND ROLL METAL, OH YEAH!! I love this. It’s so versatile, but still interesting. Dimensions: 13.5 in. x 7 in. x 4 in. Not too shabby for Amazon.con ($28.74).

Okay, this ons is really cool because it’s convertable. When you fold the handle down, this Nine West purse is a perfect clutch. However, flip the handle UP and it’s becomes a regular handbag! And that black patent leather is to DIE for. Dimensions are 15-1/4″ x 7″. Available at Macy’s ($59.00)

A little bit sweeter, a little more glitzy; this is a cute satin bag with some diamond-esque rhinestones adorning the front. Better for dressier occasions, but any occasion is a dressy occasion if you’ve got the attitude. Dimensions are 13 x 5 x 1.5. Available at… ($69.99). (I can’t believe I’m suggesting shopping at Amazon… but, hey… A deal is a deal, right?)

So get out there, ladies, and enjoy this trend. Also enjoy carrying around everything you want to, instead of all that you can in a 2 square inch space.

Introducing: The Flat Wallet

September 1, 2007

Okay, maybe “introducing” isn’t the perfect word since these babies have been around forever… But I smell a hot trend approaching here. The flat wallet is like a wallet, clutch and compact organizer all mixed into one stylish little (literally) package.

On one of my photoshoots last week, a girl came up to pay me and she had the most ADORABLE wallet. It had everything in it – credit cards, ID, cash monies, and even a lipstick. EVEN. A. LIPSTICK. At first, I thought it was a clutch, but no, no, no (as Amy Winehouse would say). I’m sure her was at a few Benjamins, but I decided at that moment that I was going to HUNT for one. Here’s an example of a spendy one:

Lodis ‘Veracruz – Diva’ Clutch Wallet; Nordstrom’s – $155.00

Unfortunately, as an indepedent photographer and student, I can’t justify spending 1.5 Hundred dollars on a hot little piece like this. But you can see where I’d be tempted, right?

So I scoured ebay, I dished on Froogle, I went everywhere. Luckily, I found a SUPER steal at Target, from Isaac Mizrahi:

$15! That, my friends, I can do. It’s no sparkly green pretty flower thing, but I can suckerpunch that thing with some fake rhinestones or ribbon and make it just as good. I also found on ebay that there are a bunch of retailers selling various (yet small 4″x7″) flat wallets with very awesome designs on them from anywhere between $17 and $30 from a wholesale producer named Kristine. I hate recommending specific products from ebay because they could all very well be gone tomorrow, but I definitely suggest at least checking.

Oh! And if you’ve found any in other places, PLEASE TELL ME! I need to get my hands on one of these STAT!
