Hi-ho, hi-ho…

November 28, 2007

It’s off to work we go!

It’s winter here in America and if you live in any type of urban or metropolitan area, chances are good that you, or someone you know, use public transportation. I have a very good friend who buses to the middle of Seattle, then walks blocks and blocks to her high-rise office building. It all sounds well and good until you hear her ultimate downfall: she’s obsessed with hot shoes.

Why is this a problem? Well, no one in their self-loving right mind would feel comfortable (literally!) with walking 6 blocks in 3.5″ heels… So what’s a shoe-phile to do? The ultimate goal is either to a) find cute flats that are just as walkable as the are adorable, or b) wear sneakers with a skirt (EW!) and store your cute shoes in your bag until you hit the office.

No one who reads this blog should think B is a good option. If you do, you just learned something! 😉
American Eagle Mary Jane Flat

The American Eagle Mary Jane Flat would easily take you from the bus, to the streets, to the office. Especially since they’ll only set you back Stick them at the bottoms of grey tights and a cotton dress – it might sound like you’ll feel four years old, but trust me – it’s better! They’d also be just as cute beneath some slim trousers or straight leg jeans!

Lela Rose for Payless Addle Hill Flat

Are you into the menswear craze sweeping the world? Check out the Lela Rose for Payless Addle Hill Flat
which, with it’s pointed toe and patent ribbon, add some charm to these unique flats. Unless you’re daring, or some kind of genius – I’d just stick to wearing these with full-length pants… But the cut/color/style is up to you! God a wild streak? These come in fire-engine red, too! Why not grab both – they’re only $25! If you catch ’em on sale, you only pay $17!

There are some ideas to get you started. Also, if you are the heels-in-the-bag type of girl… Maybe you can get a pair of those flats for a steal, then hide these in your bag!:

I’ve been tagged by Spoiled Pretty!

So now that I’m “it”, I have to indulge you by telling 7 secrets (…or little known facts, anyway) about myself, then tag 7 other bloggers at the end of my post! Here we go!

1. I am a classically trained opera singer! I was in training studying Italian arias for… too long. I quit because my instructor said I could never sing jazz – and if I can’t sing jazz, what good am I?! What good is ANYONE!? 😉

2. I started my first company when I was 16. It was a proud owner of a booking agency called Compos Mentis (which is latin for “sound mind” – I thought it was clever!). It failed after about… one year. Well, I had to try!

3. I am addicted to trashy TV! I love “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila”, “I Love New York” and “America’s Next Top Model”!

4. I read over 50 blogs per day. Not just posts, y’all – full on BLOGS.

5. Sometimes, I pretend that I’m a total gangster. Whether it be Chicago mobster (mastered the accent), or a chick from the Bronx (see above photo) – I’ve got all the lingo DOWN!

6. I not only sing in the shower, I dance there, too! Very dangerous – do not try at home!

7. My favorite food is “The Believer” (chicken parmesean) from local restaurant, 13 Coins. I’ll eat it any time, any place, any where.

Whew! I feel nude!

I tag…

The Joys of a Tuesday!

November 28, 2007

These are Hot Kiss “Cameron” boots from Famous Footwear. Also – since I bought my boyfriend some hot shoes, too… Mine were half off because of their “BOGO”-style sale, weighing in at $22!

Beautiful payday was yesterday, providing me with enough money for Christmas gifts… As well as my annual Christmas gift – for myself. I’m donning these beauties today:

They’re Hot Kiss’ “Cameron” Boot from Famous Footwear. The best part? They were only about $22!! I know! Famous Footwear is having a delicious post-Turkey-day sale where, after you buy one pair of [well priced…] shoes at full price, you get the second pair half off! I suppose they call that “BOGO” or something, yes? I bought my boyfriend a pair of hot Sketchers’ Urban Cleats (I was impressed, since I wore Sketchers in Jr. High!) and so I got my little babies for cheap!

I’m extremely happy with my purchase. I’ve worn them since approximately 10am (it’s now 6pm) and I’m not dying, my feet aren’t screaming… They’re wonderful!

Everyone ought to buy themselves a Christmas present, I think… We spend the most time with ourselves, and it’s important to appreciate the things we do. Here are some reasons to celebrate yourself this Christmas:

  • Eating healthy, indulging every so often…
  • Going to school, work, or whatever it is that you do to sustain yourself.
  • Hitting the hottest concert and treating your ears to something you love.
  • Appreciating the environment and recycling, eating organic, or using sustainable products in your home.
  • Donating some green, time, or energy to a non-profit organization.

These are all great ways that you take care of yourself every year, so you ought to be treated well by the most important person… Yourself!

Enjoy, my lovelies!

"Oh, this ol’ thing? It’s just Vera Wang…"

November 25, 2007

That’s the line that runs through my head every time I think about Simply Vera, the namesake’s clothing line for Kohl’s. Now we can all have a little Vera in our lives for a fraction of the cost! Check out some of the sweet deals I found:

Simply Vera Vera Wang Tie-Waist Floral Brocade Skirt. How cute is this? And for only $34, who could resist? Brocade is becoming super-hot lately in fashion, this piece is definitely a pick-up must!

Simply Vera Vera Wang Self Belt Top. Love the color, love the belt, love the sleeves… Love the price at $24.

Simply Vera Vera Wang Framed Hobo. I don’t really understand “framed hobo” (seems like an oxymoron) but this bag is adorable. It clocks in at a bit more ($55.20) but at 11″ x 10″, it’s worth it.

Snatch ’em up before they’re all gone!

Happy Thanks Day!

November 23, 2007

I hope everyone had a good recovery from Turkey Coma, or regular-food coma… Even if you don’t celebrate this American holiday – you should still pig out like tomorrow’s already gone!

I don’t have any fabulous bargains for you today, but I DO have some tips on how to take care of your delicate skin ’round these times!

My Skincare Bible

1) NEVER sleep with makeup on! No! Never! Even if it was an amazing night at the bar and you danced and danced and now you’re just so tired!! – Take it off, baby, take it off!

2) Stack your pillows up beneath your head at night – this keeps the blood in your head from pooling below your eyes which creates those quaint little bags we all love so dearly. But if you do happen to wake up with the puffs, just put an ice-pack on there for about 5 minutes, then apply eye cream or moisturizer.

3) To keep liquid foundation from running off (slaving over a hot stove, or an HBR…), mix a little waterproof sunblock in with it, then apply as normal. The sunblock also won’t hurt with all the reflected UV rays off snow, rain, and clouds this season.

4) DAILY SPF MOISTURIZER! Before bed and when you wake up. This is NOT optional!

5) Depending on your skin type, you ought to use a mild to meduim exfoliant every 3-4 days. This’ll keep your skin a-glow.

6) Steam, steam, steam! One thing I’ve been doing since I saw my big sister try it at 7 years old was “steaming your face”. You simply boil water, pour it into a glass or ceramic dish (maybe 3-4 cups), then sit before the bowl facing it. Tilt your head down over the bowl so you’re staring straight into the water. Drape a towel over your head (to keep the steam in) and close your eyes and ENJOY! It’s super relaxing and GREAT for your pores.

I’ll try to be back again this weekend with some good post-Thanksgiving bargains. This is my season!

The Softer Side of Life…

November 20, 2007

There’s a fine line between Grandma-style and goddess-style when it comes to softer looks. A lot of it has to do with color, LOTS with fabric, and lots more with the cut of a garment. With metallics and warmth being the up and up this season, we’re really going to have to dig through the bargain bins for these – but it’ll be worth it for the feminine forms you’ll be able to create. Just don’t forget the stilettos. 😉

Inspired by the last top from our Lookbook Ripoff #2, readers and I
realized there was something to be said for soft, airy fabrics. So I
dug up some of the most beautiful, ethereal tops for heavenly prices.

Lookbook Ripoff #2 – Della Street: Sex Symbol

November 20, 2007

Penny Lane, Della Street, Maggie Gyllenhaal in Secretary… Smoldering examples of a classic favorite in style: The Sexy Secretary.

Today’s Lookbook Ripoff comes from MaxStudio:

Foxy, no? So all this stuff together is about… $400. Yikes. Shoes + Top + Skirt = that much? Miss Elle don’t think so. Let’s try something else…

The beautiful pastel-colored silk blouse above rings in at a powerful $98. We found lots of similar tops to the one pictured above… But Hot & Cheap is hot for a reason – so we found something a little less soft and a little more saucy. The metallic in the shirt offsets the matte look of the skirt and opaque tights. Plus, it’s just sexy. Find it at Mandee for $24.

Now for that hot, slimming pencil skirt. The above one costs $148, no thank you. I’d rather pay $20.99 for an equally hot, pinstriped pencil skirt from Mandee. Hits right at the knees and looks great with any heel. Yum!

Here are some black tights from Target – cheap to boot – $12!

And those shoes! Those fierce, fierce shoes… We didn’t really feel like spending $150 on a pair of hot’n’strappy sandals. We felt like spending $44.90 on nearly the same ones from FlyJane.

So instead of the $250 we would have spent on the hot lookbook outfit, we’ll instead pay only about $120 to look just as fabulous! That’s less than half!

Replace your office phone with a rotary phone, get some cateye specs, and rock this look, girls… Rock it.

Hot to [Fox]trot!

November 19, 2007

So I’ve just returned from a beacoup exciting trip to Portland, Oregon to see one of my favorite bands, Cold War Kids. Just so you know, they were FANTASTIC. An absolute must-see/hear.

But while I was in Portland (PDX, as the kids say…) I was absolutely humbled by the street fashion there. It ranged from Chan Marshall-esque folk vintage to absolutely Beckham-chic. I, personally, can’t pull off the folky-vintage romance, but the Upper Manhattan housewife look, I adore. Unfortunately, my balance sheets feel differently.

My beautiful friends over at FlyJane feel my pain. They’re one of my FAVORITE resources for “OMG looks exactly like enter gorgeous designer here‘s pumps!” at absolutely eye-gouging low prices. Let me illustrate…

This is Christian Louboutin’s newest hot-shoe in Hollywood/NYC/everywhere, the FoxTrot:

Foxy as hell, right? Right. Christian Louboutin is, and will be forever notorious for the hottest shoes… Whew. So hot. And so is my accountant after I spend $710 on them. *choke!*

Alright, so you’ve seen the original, check out FlyJane’s shoe:
Um, spitting image, n’est-ce pas? I know, there are some bargain-haters out there that’d get all bent out of shape because “omg it’s a knock off. they’re stealing, omg.” Well, guess what – style isn’t about the brand that’s on the shoe, it’s about the look you’re projecting and how it makes you feel. So if that’s your outlook – “you should check yourself, forced ye wreck yourself”, as my Mooninite friends like to say. 😉 And the damage on these shoes? $42.90. Pick up your jaws, girls… Because they come in silver, too.

It gives me such great little chills when I get compliments on my shoes… And I get to say “Yeah, $43, sugar. Eat ya’ heart out.”

Go check these shoes out at FlyJane! I just peeped their site this morning (it’s a Monday ritual) and they’ve got a boatload of new shoes in! So go see! Git!
